The Donation Station
Repairing Instruments. Restoring Opportunity.
Every instrument has a story.
Some have been played for decades before falling silent. Some sit forgotten in lofts, cupboards or spare rooms. Others simply need a little care before they can inspire someone new.
The MLC Donation Station exists to give those instruments a second life and, in doing so, create new opportunities for children, young people and communities.
Run by the Music Learning Collective, the Donation Station is a community-powered initiative that receives donated musical instruments, restores them where possible, and puts them back into active use. Through repair, refurbishment, volunteering and learning opportunities, we help remove barriers to music education whilst creating meaningful ways for people to contribute, connect and belong.
How It Works
Donate an Instrument
If you have an unused musical instrument, you can help somebody else's musical journey begin.
We welcome donations of guitars, keyboards, drums, brass, woodwind, string instruments and more. Every donation is assessed and cared for by our team to ensure it can continue supporting music-making for years to come.
Some instruments are redistributed directly to learners and educational programmes. Others are professionally refurbished and made available for sale, helping to fund the long-term sustainability of the project.
Repair and Restore
Repair lies at the heart of the Donation Station.
Instruments are carefully assessed, serviced and restored by skilled practitioners and volunteers, transforming neglected or damaged instruments into reliable tools for learning, creativity and expression.
By extending the life of instruments, we promote sustainability, reduce waste and celebrate the value of craft, care and stewardship.
Learn Through Participation
The Donation Station is not simply a repair service. It is a place where people can learn by doing.
Young people can develop practical skills, build confidence and gain experience through hands-on participation. Activities may support recognised pathways such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and The King's Trust Achieve programme whilst helping participants develop teamwork, communication, responsibility and problem-solving skills.
Volunteer and Contribute
Everyone has something to offer.
Whether you have technical knowledge, practical skills, lived experience or simply a willingness to help, there are opportunities to get involved.
We welcome people from all backgrounds, including members of the Armed Forces community, veterans, parents, carers and local residents. Some volunteers arrive ready to repair instruments. Others simply want to be part of something positive. Both are equally valued.
Why It Matters
Access to music education is increasingly shaped by circumstance.
For many children and young people, the biggest barrier to participation is not ability or ambition, but access to a functional instrument.
The Donation Station exists to help bridge that gap.
Every donated instrument, volunteer hour and refurbished sale contributes towards a cycle of opportunity that helps young people access music, develop confidence and discover their potential.
When an instrument is repaired, something more than wood, metal or electronics is restored. Opportunity is restored too.
